Jing.com makes collaboration SMS easy

Sometimes you just need to show someone what's going on your screen or vice versa.  Sure there are a ton of screen sharing apps out there.  Some of them have gone a really long way to making that process easy, but even when they work great, there's still too much friction involved in setting up a sharing session (call me lazy).

The easier something is, the more often it will be used.  Look at SMS text messaging. It's a stupidly expensive way to send information when you look at dollars per byte, but it's stupid simple easy!  You don't even have to wait for your laptop to come out of standby.  You don't even have to wait for the phone ring.

Jing makes showing someone what's going on your side of the screen almost SMS simple.  Once you sign up and install the app (ok, there's some overhead but you only have to do it once,) click capture, select a portion of the screen or a window, then select snapshot or video capture.  Once you're done you can save the capture a number of ways but the really easy way is to have the capture saved on a hosted site.  Jing puts the url into your clipboard so you can just paste the link into an email or instant message.  Now that's easy.

Got Backups?

Didn't think so.  Most people don't.  Not even people who know better.  What?  You *do* have backups?  Awesome!  Have you ever tried to restore from them?

And that's the key.  Backups are probably the #1 neglected task in all of IT, but should probably be closer to the #1 priority.  Unfortunately, a lot of people (probably the vast majority) who do perform regular backups never test them to see if they could successfully restore.

A wise woman once told me, if you haven't tested the restore, then you don't have a backup!

Technology Joke

"Hey, you know why we don't call telephones technology anymore?  Because they work!"
[insert laughs here]

'Ok, maybe it wasn't so funny, but it is true.  Once upon a time, telephones (you know the kind that sits on your desk and is plugged into a wall) were probably considered whiz-bang technology.  Today we don't think of them as such.  They're just there and they just work.  That should be the goal of the technologists- to make their services and products no longer technology.

The Napoleon Dynamite Problem, one million dollars, and machine learning

I knew Napoleon Dynamite was a polarizing movie, but I didn't realize it would be costing people a million dollars.  Netflix has offered $1 million to the first person or group who can write a program that will make movie recommendations 10% better or more accurately than Netflix currently can.  It turns out that several people are very, very close, but Napoleon and Pedro are throwing them a curveball.
